The Fisherman and the Mermaid

Once upon a time, long, long ago, there lived an old fisherman with his wife and two children in a city.

Every day, he went out fishing. Whatever he caught, he would sell some, eat some, and provide for his family.

One day, he got into his boat and went fishing. After going far out into the sea, he started waiting.

After a while, something got caught on the fisherman's line. The fisherman looked at his line, and guess what he saw? A beautiful mermaid with blonde hair!

The Mermaid said to the fisherman: "I have come to help you."

But the fisherman was so scared that he quickly sailed away!

He went home and told his wife what he had seen.

His wife said: "This is a gift from God for us! You must go there tomorrow, but this time, do not be afraid."

The next day, the fisherman went to the same spot and started waiting. After a while, the Mermaid came and said: "Tell me whatever you wish, and I will do it."

The fisherman said: "Our situation is not very good. I want a meal that my family and I can eat."

The Mermaid told the fisherman to go home and promised that the meal he wanted would be waiting for him that evening.

The fisherman rushed home with excitement. He saw that there was a beautiful feast on his table! The whole family ate happily and filled their tummies.

The next morning, the fisherman went back to the same place. This time, he asked the Mermaid for a big palace.

When he returned home that evening, he saw a giant palace instead of his old house! He was overjoyed and went inside.

When it was evening, his wife said: "Husband! Tomorrow, ask the Mermaid for even more things. If we don't, she might leave, and we won't get anything more."

The fisherman became very greedy. Even though he had so much, he wanted more, and he became unhappy when he couldn't get what he wanted.

He set off right away the next morning. This time, he asked the Mermaid to become the ruler of the village, to control everyone, and for everyone to depend on him.

The Mermaid then realized that the fisherman was selfish and greedy. She took back all the magic gifts and returned his old life to him.

She said to the fisherman: "Let this be a lesson for you. Your eyes were never satisfied; you were never happy with what you had. You always wanted more. You did not share what you had with anyone. You forgot where you came from, and you wanted people to depend on you. You did not know that true richness is in a heart that can share what it has."

The fisherman felt very sorry for what he had done. He understood that happiness and richness are like a treasure that grows when you share it. He learned that one way to be kind to himself is by being kind to others.

This event taught a lesson to the people in the village, too. From that day on, the villagers helped each other and lived happily ever after.
