Baldy Boy and the Broken Mirror

Baldy Boy and the Broken Mirror

Once upon a time, when camels were town-criers and fleas were barbers... when I was rocking my mother’s cradle "tingir mingir"... our Baldy Boy set out on the road again with his wooden staff in hand and his shiny, bald head reflecting the sun.

Baldy Boy had a piece of dry bread in his bag and a world of joy in his heart. He traveled over hills and valleys, across rivers and plains. At a crossroads, he saw something glittering on the ground. He leaned down and realized it was a broken piece of a mirror.

The Secret in the Mirror

Baldy Boy picked up the shard and held it to his face. But what was this? Instead of his own face, he saw a sorrowful Sultan sitting in a lush green garden! Baldy Boy said in surprise:

— "Good heavens! My bald head is gone, and a crowned head has taken its place. Either this mirror is magical, or my eyes are playing tricks on me!"

Just then, the Sultan in the mirror spoke: — "Hey, brave lad! I am the Sultan of a faraway land. They trapped my happiness inside this mirror and then shattered it into a thousand pieces across the world. If you find the other pieces and save me, I will grant you whatever you wish!"

The Challenging Journey

Baldy Boy, known for his helpful nature, got straight to work. He crossed mountains and forests chasing the mirror shards.

  • The First Piece: It was in a giant's cave. While the giant was sleeping, Baldy Boy sang him a lullaby, lulled him into a deeper sleep, and quietly took the piece.

  • The Second Piece: It was in a bird's nest. Baldy Boy gave the bird some feed, and the bird thanked him by handing over the shard.

  • The Final Piece: It was in an old woman's chest back in his own village. The old woman said, "This was a memory from my youth, but let it be sacrificed for a good cause," and gave it to him.

The Happy Ending

Baldy Boy brought all the pieces together. As the shards united, the mirror began to glow, and suddenly a giant palace gate swung open. The Sultan he had seen in the mirror was standing right there! The Sultan’s sorrow had vanished, replaced by a great smile.

The Sultan said: — "Ask of me whatever you wish, Baldy Boy!"

Our Baldy Boy thought for a moment, scratched his bald head, and said: — "My Sultan, your health is enough for me. But if you could send a sack of flour and a jar of molasses to my mother’s house, I would be the happiest man alive!"

The Sultan was amazed by Baldy Boy’s generous heart. He gifted him gold and silks. Baldy Boy returned to his village and lived happily ever after with his mother.

They reached their goal, and we shall climb the stairs of their success...
